Oil leaks lead by a mile. Valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets on the N52 and N55 six-cylinders harden with heat and start seeping. Cooling systems come second. BMW's electric water pumps (common on 2006–2013 sixes) fail without much warning, and the plastic thermostat housings and expansion tanks get brittle. An overheated BMW engine is an expensive BMW engine, so we treat any coolant complaint as urgent.
The N20 four-cylinder (2012–2015 328i, X1, X3 and others) has a documented timing chain and guide failure problem which will let you know with a whine or rattle from the back of the engine that should never be ignored. Turbocharged N54 cars (2007–2010 335i) are known for high-pressure fuel pump and injector failures, long-crank starts and stumbles being the tell.
