The EA888 2.0T found in the Jetta GLI, GTI, Passat, Tiguan shares its known issues with its Audi cousins: early tensioner versions (2008–2013) that risk letting the timing chain jump, plastic water pump assemblies that crack and seep coolant into the V of the engine, and a PCV valve whose failure causes rough idle, whistling, and oil leaks that mystify parts-swappers. Carbon buildup on intake valves is a when, not an if, on any direct-injection VW past 80k or so.
Ignition coils deserve their own line. VWs eat them, one at a time, each announced by a flashing check engine light and a stumble. We keep the diagnosis quick and cheap and the scan is free.
DSG dual-clutch transmissions are brilliant when maintained and expensive when neglected. The 40,000-mile fluid and filter service is not optional; skip it twice and the mechatronic unit starts writing its resignation letter.
Older 2.5L five-cylinder Jettas and Golfs are honestly tough little engines. Mostly they need vacuum pump reseals and routine care.
