Common Subaru problems
The famous one: head gaskets on the EJ25 2.5L, roughly 1999–2011 Outbacks, Foresters, Legacys, and Imprezas. The engine design puts the gaskets in a tough spot, and when they go, doing the job right, machined surfaces, quality multi-layer gaskets, new timing components while it's apart, is the difference between fixing it once and fixing it twice.
Next: oil consumption on the newer FB-series engines, mainly 2011–2014 Foresters, Outbacks, and Crosstreks. Piston ring problem, widely documented, subject of a class action. If your low-oil light comes on between changes, you're in the club.
Subaru's CVT (2010–2015 especially) can shudder or hesitate; Subaru extended the warranty on many of them, which tells you what you need to know. And then there's wheel bearings. Subarus eat wheel bearings at a higher rate than most, announced by a hum that changes with cornering.
