Common problems we see with Chevrolets
AFM lifter failure on 2007-and-up 5.3L Silverados, Tahoes, and Suburbans is the big one. The cylinder-deactivation lifters collapse, the truck ticks or misfires, and if you keep driving it you can wipe a cam lobe. This will turn on your check engine light because your engine is misfiring. Caught early, it's a repair. Caught late, it's an engine.
Those same 2010–2014 5.3L engines like to burn oil. Bad enough that owners between oil changes can run dangerously low without a single drip on the driveway. Check your dipstick monthly. Seriously.
Equinox and Terrain 2.4L engines from 2010 to 2017 have a well-earned reputation for oil consumption and timing chain wear. Cruze and Sonic 1.4L turbos eat PCV diaphragms and coolant fittings. And 2009–2012 Traverse V6s stretched timing chains often enough that most techs can quote the symptoms from memory: rattle on cold start, then a check engine light for cam correlation.
None of this means Chevys are bad vehicles. It means they need a shop that knows where to look.
